HORSE
Horses... have been a part of people’s lives since ancient times. They have at various times been used for meat, milk, leather, transportation and companionship.
There are three categories of horses at the farm, saddle horses and draft horses and miniature horses.
Saddle horses are now used primarily for recreation. Before there were cars, these horses provided the main means of transportation. There are many different kinds of horses that are used for riding. Here at the farm we have an Arabian, a Quarter horse, a Morgan and an Appaloosa.
Draft horses are work animals. They are used to pull everything from wagons to plow to logs. They were a farmer’s main way of plowing his fields and hauling his goods. If saddle horses were the cars of the past, then draft horses were the tractor-trailers. We use two types of draft horses here at the farm, Belgians and Percherons.
Miniature horses are not a specific breed; they are simply a smaller version of other breeds. A miniature horse must be less than 34 inches in height. They will look like whatever sort of horse they originally came from.
The miniature horse is a fairly recent development. They are used as show animals, companions, in therapeutic programs, and in cases where a person is unwilling or unable to care for a full sized horse.
